Meine Rezension basiert auf der englischen Originalausgabe. Ich kämpfe mich gerade durch den 5. Band "A dance with dragons". Nachdem ich Buch 1 und 2 mit viel Interesse gelesen habe waren Buch 3 und vor allem 4 meiner Meinung nach viel zu langatmig. Man hat den Eindruck, Martin hat Schwierigkeiten, die Fäden der grob geschätzt 20 Handlungsstränge noch ausreichend in der Hand zu behalten um die Spannung aufrechtzuerhalten. Während ich beim häufig (und meist ungerechtfertigten) zu Vergleichen herangezogenen "Lord of the Rings" von Tolkien die Erfahrung gemacht habe, dass die ersten 200 Seiten mühsam sind, aber im Nachhinein der Glaubwürdigkeit der Story sehr zuträglich sind, habe ich diesen Eindruck bei George Martin's Epos nicht. Im Gegenteil: es wird mittendrin richtiggehend langweilig, weil die Handlungsstränge kaum Höhepunkte haben. Dass viele der Figuren, die man liebgewonnen hat, sterben und einfach keine Rolle mehr spielen, hilft auch nicht weiter. Ich weiss jetzt gegen Ende des Buches 5 immer noch nicht, wohin die Reise letztlich geht, wie ein Höhepunkt aussehen könnte. Das sowas grundsätzlich auch seinen Reiz hat, will ich nicht leugnen, aber denselben Effekt hätte man auch mit zwei Büchern weniger erreichen können.
Ich bin erinnert an die Otherland-Quadrologie von Tad Williams, die - obwohl ein komplett anderes Metier - an derselben Krankheit leidet.
Ich lese das Werk nur weiter, weil ich jetzt zu viel investiert habe, um aufzuhören. Und, um fair zu bleiben, Band 5 ist wieder deutlich besser, vor allem in der zweiten Hälfte nimmt die Spannung wieder zu.
